WHO IS A PROFFESSIONAL TEACHER?

A professional teacher should be proud of being a well trained teacher- A well trained teacher should be someone whose specialized training and skills are used to benefit others. This is important considering the society in which we live whose believe is that teaching is a last resort to career opportunity. Teaching profession is an in born instinct therefore teachers are born not made.

Professional teacher is human interaction oriented- A professional teacher should always enjoy being in contact with others.  Almost the entire working day of a teacher is spent in human interaction, the teacher learn about different cultures and different life experiences. Thereby making his life to be enriched by the varied worlds of different people (old and young) A teacher gain experience with human interaction.

A professional teacher is trained to touch life and make a difference- teaching is more than a teacher impacting knowledge to a learner. A trained teacher should feel the anguish and joy of his students. A teacher should feel the pain of a student in the last seat who is encountering some problems and should be of help. A teacher should come to the student who knows the answer to a question but could not comprehend because of his short sightedness, a teacher should come to the aid of that student who is always shy in the classroom environment. The teacher should look into the restive and restless students in the classroom. A trained teacher should be one who makes difference in his students lives.

Teaching involved intellectual knowledge of the subject matter. For a teacher to be professionally sound, a teacher must have become very interested in a particular subject. For example a teacher that is in love with mathematics should be willing to share this excitements and stimulation with others.

A teacher should be willing exposed others to what he love and teaches.
A proficient teacher should be flexible as much as possible. A teacher should always seek for knowledge through various means- internet, extended vacation, journals, seminars, weekly or monthly educational newspaper, etc all these leads to intellectual advancements and stimulation growth and also makes ready access to intellectual community.

A professional teacher should be creative to the core. Being creative should be the watch word of a trained teacher. Infact, this distinguishers a well ‘trained teacher’ from a teacher. It is believed that for effective teaching and learning to take place, a well creative instructional aid should be in place. This comes in various forms either audio visual or non audio visual. This is carried out with proper research planning to create effective materials such as good lesson plan, c’d’s  etc.

A well trained teacher should always apply the rudiments and ethics of the teaching           profession. A teacher should tried as much as possible to use reinforcements, motivations, rewards etc in driving home points for effective teaching and learning to take place.

A trained teacher should be seen as a parent, friend or a last resort—The student should see the teacher as a friend in need and a friend in deed. The pupil should see his teacher as a last resort in times of trouble.

A well trained teacher should not spank or call students by names- situation whereby you hear big heads, mum-mum, slow-motion, coconut heads etc are demoralising and disgusting to a child.

Finally the teacher should be conscious of the classroom environment and lead, teach by example and should always be a good role model. A good teacher and well trained teacher should not sleep in the classroom for example, should be well dressed etc.
